Doh! Makes for adventure, but that gas can is heavy when it's got gas in it. Actually, when I drive it to a gas station the attendant will generally put it back in the car for me. I hope he's fixed the mufflers, which slipped off the pipes a bit. He only noticed the problem when he came into town and an old lady at the corner shook her cane and yelled at him. (He wears ear plugs under his helmet.) Her ire inspired him to check out his mufflers and that's when he noticed the gap. He's written notes to himself to fix the exhaust, but I am ill informed. He plays deaf when I ask. It's a nice bike from 1942. There was one of these from 1935 at the vintage motorcycle show last weekend, and it still had the original paint bravely clinging to the tank and fenders. It won 1st place in the American category. There was a rod connecting the shift hand lever to a foot lever, giving the rider options. Wish I'd had my camera!

Vitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05648727808256233855noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23827397.post-24160625397187346132023-01-12T16:16:00.001-08:002023-01-12T16:16:51.404-08:00

Oh, joy. This will let me post a photo. This is one of my favorites, taken by the happy elf in the corner. It's the trombone section of the Community Band at our holiday concert in December. Getting to play with people is the most fun I get, and three of these, plus an unpictured tuba also play in our trombone quartet. Yes, that's five people, but we play quartet music, and the tuba player plays her bass trombone.

It's been raining all year (2023) but because there was such a drought, rain is welcome.

I just ordered a Classic Motorcycles calendar, which is a month late, but if late is better than never, it's about time. When I go to lunch with my friends, more and more we discuss how we're all falling apart. We talk about what books are worth reading, but also how readable the font size is. We all like the Large Print Editions.

Now that you know everything, I'll go away again.
Vitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05648727808256233855noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23827397.post-10470385756390927392022-03-15T16:12:00.001-07:002022-03-15T16:12:12.767-07:00Spring Bulbs Bloom
I'd post a photo of spring bulbs blooming with ducks sleeping, but there's been a change and it's over my head. The young carpenter who's been doing most of the work is waiting for the inspector, who didn't show up, so he's gone off to another job and will check back. The carpenter is a very impressive worker, and reminds me of HH when he was fixing other people's vehicles, all go go go, and a good job, too. The door is now in that trailer in the front yard. We have to make do with the laundry room. At least we have electricity and water. A lot of friends and relatives, not to mention strangers in our state have been weeks without electricity. Most of them have generators so they can get water to their animals, because most of them have animals, which is why they live in outlying areas slow to have their power restored after storms knock down trees and knock out power, and they need power to bring water up from the wells. We are really lucky to have the luxury of water and light.

This bathroom destruction is in aid of my continuing deterioration, but I am planning to eventually get a new fake knee, and do better with it than my mother-in-law did. I'm way too slow to catch the humming birds that visit. I feel lucky just to get a glimpse of them!

The blue bird has a friend and they seem to enjoy sitting on the fence while hunting for bugs. They trade turns swooping down to the lawn below. Another bird who likes this corner spot is the scrub jay, which is also a beautiful blue. Is it a coincidence?
This female Mallard duck enjoyed our yard as long as we had water in the ditch, but on this day, she accidentally landed on the wrong side of the fence, and quacked and quacked, and the male came to the outside of the fence, and they followed each other on their own side until Hero Husband decided to herd her out through the gate, which was 75 feet away (25 feet one way, and 50 feet another.) Runway too short for duck take-off. She did not enjoy the herding, but was very glad to get out of the back yard, and mister duck was also de-stressed.
This robin was an active bather who shares the bath with other birds. Watching them splash and fidget and throw water is about the most fun we get when we aren't reading. Such a worthy project it turned out to be! HH would say, "It keeps me off the streets."
What a sad little mite. But many, many hours of polishing and spoke shining up, and chain cleaning and everything else cleaning, and painting, and what a busy boy he was. He'd come in and tell me just what he'd done that day, and I was generally on my way somewhere, so didn't properly record his progress, which was steadily coming along. The wiring was particularly tricky.

Isn't that a little sweetie-pie? There was all sorts of attachment things, each coming with it's own unique problem and solution. Alas, I can't remember them all.

Now he says when he gets older and frailer, this will be the last bike he sells, because it is perfection. Light, smooth, fast, economical. There's a lot to recommend it. Sorry I took so long to show it off.

It's HH, he's wondering if I can stop by the parking lot he's broken down in on my way home.

I discovered he wanted me to tow him home. Since the car'd been giving him trouble, he was prepared with a big heavy-duty tow rope. The rope was so big and strong, and very very long, that it came undone twice on the way home. I don't understand why it is so long.

He ordered parts to rebuild the carburetor, and declared a diaphragm in the carburetor had been installed upside down, though it still seemed to work, but he turned it over. The new parts didn't fix the stall problem, so he rebuilt the distributor with parts he already had. Here's the lighting system he set up using his handy dandy cymbal stand. Now it works and we've been running all our errands all week in it for testing purposes.

The rest of his drum kit is out of the closet now, since I got rid of my mom's pump organ.

The leaves turn brilliant to ensure that we miss them when they go. Need raking every day! Soon the tree will be bald. We planted this to replace a short-lived Pacific pine, and it shot up, as you see.
We heard the Cannonball Run this year would be from Portland to Portland, and would stop in The Dalles on Sept 22, so we made our biggest trip this year (overnight) to go see the motorcycles. They were all built pre-1929, but for this trip, they had battery-packs powering LED lights. See the belt drive? See the plunger? We had a lovely time.

With the successful installation of the window seal, we started driving the Minx farther afield. There was a car show in Brooks at the Vintage Car and Motorcycle Museum where the Laverda is for the summer, so we took the minx there. I was delighted to see this 1946 Hillman Minx with the suicide

You can just see the bottom of a Studebaker sign on the wall above many lovely old cars, and the blue hood-like thing over the top of the Minx hood is on a Leyland tractor. Who knew? Not me.

I heard a nice putt-putt sound as this 1914 Buick Touring Car drove up and parked a Corvette and a Cougar away from our 1960 Minx. (See the Minx below with it's hood up just past the little red Corvette? Yes, the red bits are what you can see of a 1958 Corvette convertible.)

This is the Sunbeam after it's test drive. Everything is working fine, except the old carburetor, but he can deal with it. I see that other vehicles have shift quadrants, but not like this one.

The day before the shift quadrant was installed in the Sunbeam S7, he put a star hub, which also came in a box in the mail, in the Harley 45. Luckily, the sun was out both days and both bikes got a test drive.

Last week there was also a day of sun, so all these got trips to the gas station for a top up.

Here's the other side of the Sunbeam after it's successful test ride. Test drive. Well, the bike didn't drive itself!

And here's another sun/shade shot of the 45 flathead. I sure like the way it looks without bags, even if it does have the mounting brackets mucking up the line of the rear fender.
To me, this looks like the head of a strange golf club, but I know now that it's called a quadrant. HH ordered parts from Stewart Engineering and due to the magic of magic, it arrived with all it's friends, and they're all now in the old Sunbeam mentioned in the title. He started disassembly yesterday, and today finished reassembly with new parts installed. I think the least fun part is scraping off all the old gasket. He cleaned up the old broken and worn quadrant and gave it to me. Right now it's holding pens on the kitchen table, which we don't often use for dining.

Thank goodness for Stewart Engineering! And some very helpful youtube videos. He should be very pleased with himself. It's a good thing to have lots of old things because they usually can provide him with something to do on a rainy day.

On the other hand, this window gasket is waiting to be installed on a very warm sunny day.
Mysterious to me, but to Him it's slightly less so. It's not inside the Minx yet. He has complaints about one thing and another, but thinks it will work more smoothly in future. I have to help him now by working a jack. (Scares me to pieces! Him under car and me working jack! Augh!). I'm away from the jack now. So far so good. I would call those long rods transmission rods, but that's probably incorrect. They're pretty, though, whatever they're called, but I like the gears best. The car is 58 years old, or maybe 58 1/2. I don't think this is the first time the transmission's been apart.

Now if the rubber windscreen seal comes, that will be ducky! Especially if it's the right rubber. I think He described it as "snakey". A convoluted shape. Certainly not straightforward. Unless I'm making this all up, but why else would he have to special order it from England? He just wants to get the car out of his motorcycle shop!Vitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05648727808256233855noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23827397.post-79453329068526804972017-10-26T17:35:00.001-07:002017-11-04T09:01:59.714-07:002017 Birthday Camping Trip

Here's the 1954 BSA B-31 on a camping trip to the coast. This photo was taken Oct 5 by HH. With a rider 68 years old and a bike 63 years old, they did quite well.
Everytime he rides one of his motorcycles (which is not everyday, but nearly) he says that particular bike is running beautifully, better than ever. The enthusiasm is without restraint. He claims that whoever rebuilt it was brilliant. He bought it on eBay and had it shipped from New Zealand
That was a long time ago. He's sold the other BSA, a 650 Lightning, because it' not that different from his 650 Triumph Tiger. Now he has a little more room in the shop. He keeps talking of selling other motorcycles, but I think people have to actually give him good offers, like the kind he can't refuse. That's how he sold the Lightning, not that he meant to. It just happened.

Anyway, back to this trip, which he says he'll do again next year, he was a little cold, and there wasn't enough daylight, and the ground was too hard, and it hurt just to get up in the morning, though he didn't sleep much. It was too dark to do anything other than stay in the sleeping bag and wait for dawn.

On the way home, he was zipping up a hill and the bike was running strong, until it wasn't. He limped home and fixed it and says an intake valve was too tight, though he'd thought it was a clogged fuel line, and he changed the fuel filter. Anyway, he fixed it after it got him home. (Hooray B-31). Now he says it's better than ever.Vitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05648727808256233855noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23827397.post-5329440149457793062017-07-23T15:58:00.000-07:002017-07-23T15:58:29.048-07:00Little Old Honda on Mary's PeakBeautiful morning and time to kill before HH's BFF from high school arrives, so HH took the little old Honda 100 for a ride up to the hill top. BFF lives on the opposite coast, so his arrival is a Big Deal. He works as an ASL interpreter and has always since high school driven motorcycles.
Photo from a ride HH took after a month of rain. He was the high bidder on an Ebay auction and bought a 1960 Series IIIA Hillman Minx, which we plan to pick up on Tuesday. Have cleaned out the garage to make room for it. I don't know where to park anymore, because I used to line up with a Rupp which isn't parked in there anymore. He says he'll hang a tennis ball so I know where to park if I want him to. So far I'm doing all right without it.
School has started up again, so it's time to obey the speed limit signs in the school zones. Summer is done. Sort of.

Here's a before photo of the Laverda along with a customer's Harley from back in the days of customers, and the scooter I failed to ride much because my knee felt too unstable. Going was fun, right turns were OK, but stopping was not fun. Alas. Stupid knee.

And here's the Laverda after, because it's so pretty.

Things have been getting in the way of the camping trip. He took one failure of a trip on the 250 Ninja, but was miserable the whole time due to heavy rain. I'm pretty sure that was the last heavy rain of the summer. Anyway, he gave up and put a sneaky electronic ignition on the B-31. It doesn't show, so it's sneaky. He tried so hard and spent lots of money trying to get the original magneto and whatnot to behave reliably, but gave up. Armature was one of the words he kept using. I couldn't keep track. Anyway, as soon as he's gotten a root canal (that's a tooth thing) and a club ride and the wedding of friends, he'll be ready to take the B-31 on a camping trip to Mt. Lassen.

Meanwhile, I get to see a very odd classical music production involving a local composer, poetry, small groups, singing, ballerinas, and the daughter playing viola.

We went for a lovely drive in the '57 Chevy for Labor Day. He likes to tease me that I'll have to drive it. I have, and I can, but I prefer not. A road was closed so we followed a gravel detour that meandered between a hillside and a stream with logging on the left and farming on the right.

As you can see the sky was beautiful. We guessed all sorts of things for the orchard, but couldn't really come up with anything. Nut? Fruit? Maybe one of those.

Here's another old photo when he was still working on other people's bikes. This is a ground up restoration of an old BMW. This pretty sky photo has a stunt plane doing loops and other scary stunt plane tricks at the local airport. The pilots went up one at a time and did a rehearsed routine. They were all very nice and happy to answer any questions. The weather was perfect for plane watching and since it was more of a competition than a spectator event, there was no admission and no crowds.

That's Dad. He was a handsome guy, but whenever he was going to have his photo taken, he put on his Picture Face, which he's wearing in this blurry old scanned photo. Golf was his game, after he quit playing baseball. He'd have been a professional at baseball if it hadn't been for WWII. As it was, he was shortstop and manager for a Pacific Coast League team, and he batted clean-up.

He says he's getting one in while he still can, since he doesn't know how long he'll be able to keep doing it. But he thinks the B-31 will be a good motorcycle for an old guy because it's light, smooth, easy. Except, he's still having armature troubles. So though he loaded it up, it's not what he took. I put a B-31 photo in a few posts ago, and it was one taken while it was still in New Zealand. He bought it on Ebay many years ago. It's much nicer now. Just so you know.
The next bike he loaded up was the 250 Ninja. It's extremely reliable, nimble, easy, light, and amazingly fast. (He says that about everything). I failed to get a photo before he unpacked it and put everything on the 750Four Honda. Can you see the Ninja in the background? It's the one with all the graphic design and more current stylings. Here's the Honda all ready to go. He left yesterday and went up to Goldendale, Washington and met his friends from Seattle. I'm not sure what all they were riding. He took the camera, so maybe I'll see photos.

I was out watering the turtle this morning, when I thought I heard thunder. These days, lots of things make noise that sounds like thunder. I looked around for neighbors moving their yard scrap recycle barrels. Those are usually the cause of the sound-like-thunder. There were some solid grey clouds to the southwest, but my view of the sky is blocked by gables.

A neighbor came over looking for HH, and I asked him if he'd seen any lightning. He said "No, but I heard it." Ha! Well, the sound like thunder kept up, and rumbled on in that rolling way it sometimes has, and the clouds got darker, so I decided to start winding up the hose. Just about the time I was done, it began to pour, and I even caught a glimpse of a flash, and that crack was LOUD. My back is still wet from moving a planter that doesn't drain in under the eaves.

There's something so exciting about thunder and lightning. I guess it's because it's so dangerous. I came in here and looked up all the places HH was on the weather map, and I think he's clear. He should be home tonight, so we can have fun with Daughter tomorrow. Don't think I'll plan a picnic.Vitahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05648727808256233855noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23827397.post-36961031796554922932016-06-14T18:35:00.000-07:002016-06-14T18:35:25.740-07:00Scatterbrained

It's so nice to get flowers. These are from my daughter's boyfriend's mother. She has an amazing garden so full of flowers she has plenty to give away. I got another bunch a couple weeks later.
The flowers in the mug are an end-of-year gift from the high school where I volunteer. Notice the sprockets on the fence. HH knows I like parts, but these are the only ones he'll let me keep. There's more to the left out of the photo. The leaf between was made by a friend.
The BSA Bantam lineup is part of a swap meet at the vintage motorcycle show several unknown number of years ago. The green one is pretty cute, but HH said restoration would cost too much. I just thought Avus would maybe think his was a lot nicer than anything here.
This is a photo of Kenny Dreer with his Norton Commando behind him. It's a sad and complicated story about how hard he tried and how expensive it was and how eventually there were too many obstacles, but it was pretty exciting to see him and that bike at the vintage motorcycle show. This photo and the Bantam are so old that they aren't digital. All I know is they were taken in the past.
HH finally racked up all the miles he needed so he could do the first oil change and retune the bike after the rebuild. Here's the bike under the Yaquina Bay Bridge looking nothing like a troll. I'm not sure this will get big if it's clicked, but if it does, it's spectacular. He was really thrilled with this bike and his ride. A bit of history now. The bridge on Hwy 101 was completed in 1936. When I was a kid during the Cold War days, a Russian ship came under it in the fog. It was spooky seeing the hammer and sickle through the fog, but it needed repairs and the visit was friendly. HH wanted me to tell Avus this Sunbeam is advertised for sale in the June issue of The Classic Motorcycle. He hasn't ridden it for years, wants the room, and wants something to help pay for the little bitty car we hope to find. The car should be a smidgeon larger than the Sunbeam. All the pictures we took of it are so old they're on film instead of digital, but others have photographed it.
Photos were taken at a show and barbecue at the nearest Triumph dealer's shop. It's now a parts store because it's too costly to meet all the requirements for a dealership. HH had a lot of fun with this bike, but he's so taken with bikes he's gotten since, this one's getting nudged out, poor thing. It was purchased new in Massachusetts in 1947. The seat was hand made in around 1968 by a daughter who was a leather artist and sold leather goods at street fairs in San Francisco, though looks like it was made for a Studebaker instead of a Sunbeam. Anyway, he's excited to have the ad out, and wanted to share with you.

Here's the B-31 he's been pinion pulling at, and is planning a little solo trip with to the redwoods. This is an old photo with the silly seat that it had when he bought it (from New Zealand.) It's got a nicer seat now.
